What tour of Egypt would be complete without a visit to the great pyramid? Yesterday we took the journey. The size is impressive. We paid the additional fee it requires to get into the great Khufu. To reach the burial chamber is an interesting experience. You walk about 40 feet (standing up) through what looks like cave walls. Then you hit the first diagonal shaft. The shaft is about a 4 foot square opening at around a 45 degree angle. The "stairs" consist of a piece of plywood with 2 x 4's nailed across it. You climb this shaft about 150 feet or so. Then the ceiling opens up (to about 20 feet high) and you continue to climb the plywood / 2" x 4". Once you go another 100 feet you have to crawl through about 15 feet of a 3 x 3 foot opening. Once you get through that you are in the main burial chamber. Which is a box about 25'w x 40'l x 20'h. There s a stone box in the end of the room. Which we got to lye down in. The great pyramid was not designed to be handicapped accesible. When you are going up the 150 foot shaft you have to turn around and go back down if someone is coming the other way. If you are claustrophobic don't even bother. The air handling is marginal at best. I think the acient Egyptians spent most of their time trying to figure out how to build a Pyramid. They forgot to call the HVAC techs.
